Equality - Transparency - Collaboration
Bright Water utilizes Sociocracy as its governance model due to its emphasis on promoting equality, transparency, and collaboration among all members of an organization. Through consent decision making and a decentralized system of authority, Sociocracy enables each member of the organization to participate in the decision making process and fosters a culture of communication and feedback. This improves operational efficiency, more effective processes, and a stronger sense of community and camaraderie within the organization. The system empowers faculty and administration to collectively lead the school from within.
Furthermore, by emphasizing deliberate processes, the school can enhance the efficiency of its faculty, administration, and decision-making, resulting in improved outcomes for students, teachers, and the entire community.
With a sense of shared ownership and responsibility among members of the school community, Sociocracy fosters a greater commitment to the school's mission and goals. By working together to make decisions and solve problems, members of the school community build stronger relationships and a greater sense of trust and collaboration.
Overall, adopting a Sociocratic approach to governance in the Bright Water Waldorf School community helps create a more inclusive, equitable, and effective learning environment for everyone involved.

Backstory
In 2021, Bright Water shifted from a hierarchical “head of school" model to Sociocracy, a decentralized system of authority. In a traditional school setting, the head of school has the sole responsibility for managing the school. However, in Sociocracy, these responsibilities are divided among different circles.
While a hierarchical structure can save time in decision-making, it's not inclusive of all members of the organization. On the other hand, an egalitarian structure can be very inclusive but might take longer to make decisions. Sociocracy finds a balance by being efficient and inclusive at the same time.

Join a Circle
Parents and caregivers within the school community are invited to participate in circles. Please review the current circles and email governance@bwws-volunteer.org if you are interested in becoming a circle member or would like to simply attend a circle meeting. Circle meetings are open to the public unless specified otherwise.
